CUSD's junior high schools organized a free evening event for parents on Wednesday, January 30 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at the Center for the Arts. The event was designed especially for sixth through eighth grade parents but all CUSD parents and community members were welcomed. A national leader and author, Richard R. Ramos, spoke to parents about keeping kids safe from negative life styles and toxic influences such as drug abuse, alcohol abuse, cyberbullying, gangs, and other risky behaviors. He also talked about Parents on a Mission (POM), a program he developed to empower parents as the best solution to preventing children from joining gangs and other negative lifestyles. POM helps parents learn how to properly guide their children to make positive life choices. There are six POM sessions and they will be available to parents starting in mid-February at all three junior highs. Session topics include: Personal Growth, Parental Authority, Discipline, Trust & Loyalty, Citizenship, and Community Building.
