 ACCESS TO PENAL AND CIVIL LAWS OF THE STATE
The
Attorney General has made available information concerning crimes
committed against persons or property on school grounds. This
information includes, but is not limited to, reporting requirements,
explanations of crimes and procedures for reporting crimes, explanation
of the procedure by which any person or the school may initiate the
prosecution of offenders for these crimes, an explanation of parental
liability for injury or property damages resulting from the intentional
acts of a minor, and an explanation of any right to benefits as a
consequence of injury or damage resulting from these crimes.

 AUTHORITY OF BUS DRIVER
Students
transported in a school bus or in a school student activity bus shall
be under the authority of, and responsible to, the driver of the bus,
and the driver shall be held responsible for the orderly conduct of the
students while they are on the bus or being escorted across a street,
highway or road. Continuing disorderly conduct or persistent refusal to
submit to the authority of the driver shall be sufficient reason for a
student to be denied transportation. A bus driver shall not require any
student to leave the bus en route between home and school or other
destinations.

 OPEN CAMPUS AT HIGH SCHOOLS
The governing board of the school district, pursuant to Section 44808.5 of
the Education Code, has decided to permit the students enrolled at
Chico High (grades 10-12), Pleasant Valley High and Fair View High
Schools to leave the school grounds during the lunch period. Chico High School has a closed campus for ninth graders.
Section
44808.5 further states: "Neither the school district nor any officer or
employee thereof shall be liable for the conduct or safety of any pupil
during such time as the pupil has left the school grounds pursuant to
this section."

 PARENT/GUARDIAN LIABILITY FOR PUPIL MISCONDUCT
| Education Code Section 48904(a)(1) provides
that the parent or guardian of a minor is liable for all damages caused
by the willful misconduct of the minor that results in the injury or
death of any pupil, school district or private school employee, or
school volunteer. The parent or guardian is also liable for damages to
real or personal property belonging to the school district or private
school, or personal property belonging to a school employee, resulting
from the willful misconduct of the minor. The liability of the parent or
guardian is limited to $15,693.00, adjusted annually for inflation. |
