New Requirement: Pertussis Vaccination/Tdap Booster Shot
|
ATTENTION PARENTS OF SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS
ADOLESCENT WHOOPING COUGH BOOSTER SHOT (Tdap) REQUIREMENT!!!!
Tdap information is available on the Butte County Public Health website
State Law requires that all incoming 7th graders receive a whooping cough booster shot, called the Tdap booster, before starting junior high. We encourage you to contact your child's doctor or health care provider now to schedule an immunization appointment. Some children may qualify for free immunizations through the Vaccines for Children Program. If your child has already received the Tdap shot, please provide your child's school with proof of immunization as soon as possible.
Whooping cough (pertussis) has been widespread in California. Many students have had to miss school because they were sick. To help protect your children and others from whooping cough, a new California law now requires students to be vaccinated against whooping cough. By law, students will need proof of receiving a Tdap booster shot by September 9. (The tetanus-diphtheria booster shot, Td, will not meet the requirement.) Please see the flyer posted in the school office for more information about the Tdap vaccine and this immunization requirement.
We want to make sure your child starts school on time. I urge you to:
1. Review the new requirement as outlined in the flyer.
2. Get your child's Tdap shot now. A large number of students need a Tdap shot between now and the start of school next year. Make an appointment with your child's doctor or clinic for your child to get a Tdap booster shot now. Avoid the back-to-school rush.
3. Save your proof of immunization. Be sure to keep the written proof of your child's Tdap booster shot in a safe place. Your child will need to provide proof of immunization in order to start school.
Getting the adolescent whooping cough shot now will not only help protect your child against the ongoing threat of whooping cough but will also meet the new school requirement.
If you have any questions, please contact your School Nurse or the Butte County Health Department at 530-879-3665.

 California Healthy Kids Survey
|
Students in middle and high schools are going to be asked to be a part of the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) sponsored by the California Department of Education. This is a very important survey that will help promote better health among our youth, improve the school learning environment and combat problems such as drug abuse and violence. The survey gathers information on developmental supports provided to youth; school connectedness and barriers to learning; school safety; and health-related concerns such as physical activity and nutritional habits; alcohol, tobacco and other drug use; and risk of depression and suicide. To view the survey click below:
Middle School Version:
High School Version:
The results from this survey will be compiled into district and county-level CHKS Reports. To view a copy of our district report go to http://chks.wested.org/reports/search and type in our district name.

 Helpful Information
 FLU SEASON
|
The seasonal flu is beginning to appear. If your child is experiencing flu-like symptoms he/she must stay home. The CDC recommends that people with influenza-like illness remain at home until at least 24 hours after they are free of fever (100 F [37.8C]), or signs of a fever without the use of fever-reducing medications. In addition, please follow the everyday preventative actions below and, most importantly, please keep your child home if she/he is experiencing any flu-like symptoms, which include: fever, vomiting, headache, muscle aches, headache, dry cough, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat. Please be sure that your student is symptom free, especially of fever, for at least 24 hours prior to his/her return.
Thank you in advance for your help.

AVOID THE FLU
Healthy habits and simple actions will help reduce your risk of flu and other illnesses.
- Wash your hands. Use soap and water often, especially after coughing or sneezing. Carry alcohol-based hand cleaners in your car, backpack or purse when soap and water are not available.
- Keep your distance. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. If you're ill, stay home. You can help prevent others from getting sick.
- Cover your cough. Use a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It can prevent the spread of germs. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your arm above your hand.
- Don't contaminate. Try not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread this way, which is why hand washing is so importnt.
- Maintain good health. Get plenty of sleep. Drink lots of water and eat nutritious foods. Get regular exercise. Manage stres. Being healthy helps fight the flue.
- Get a flu vaccination. Protect yourself against seasonal illness. It's the single best way to prevent the flu.
- Stay informed. These simple flu-prevention steps are the same ones you would use in the event of pandemic influenze, a flu outbreak of global proportions.
