CONGRATULATIONS Emma Wilson Elementary and Shasta Elementary!!!

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell has announced 484 exemplary California public elementary schools were selected as 2010 California Distinguished Schools. The California School Recognition Program is now in its 24th year and honors the state's most exemplary and inspiring public schools with the California Distinguished School Award. "It is an honor to recognize the schools, and the students, parents, teachers, and administrators who helped earn this most prestigious distinction," said O'Connell.

Although participation is voluntary, the award is highly sought after by schools. Schools were identified for eligibility on the basis of their Academic Performance Index and Adequate Yearly Progress results. The applicants were also identified by their success in narrowing the achievement gap that exists between higher-performing and lower-performing students. All applicants underwent a stringent selection process conducted by the California Department of Education with the help of many educators from across the state.

March 10, 2010 - The Hall of Fame recognized Thomas W. Kelly, a 1960 graduate of ChicoHigh School and Michelle Power, who graduated from Pleasant Valley High School in 1988.

Judge Kelly initially worked in the California Attorney General's Office and the Butte County District Attorney's Office before going into private practice.  He became a Judge in 1994, recently retiring as Judge of the Superior Court for Butte County and is recognizing Blackie Gilbert and Mel Jones as his honored teachers.

Since her graduation from PVHS, Michelle Power has enjoyed an active retail career managing stores for The Gap and Pottery Barn throughout Northern and Southern California and is currently co-owner, with her husband, Gentry, of Bidwell Perk.  Michele is recognizing Tom Needles and Patricia Scully as being instrumental in her growth at PVHS.

The Chico Unified School District Board of Education recognized Roger Williams as the 2009-2010 Harry M. "Hank" Marsh Award recipient. Mr. Williams was Principal of Chico High School for 23 years and, in 2003, after his retirement, was instrumental in establishing the Chico High Foundation, which is now part of the North Valley Community Foundation. The Chico Unified School District Board of Education is especially appreciative of Roger Williams' hard work in raising funds for students of Chico Unified School District, and most especially Chico High School.

In addition, the Education Hall of Fame recognized Jan Doney, a sixth grade teacher at Marigold School and Jon Nickerson, Special Day and ROP Diversified Occupations teacher at Chico High School as Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year.

The Hall of Fame was created for the purpose of serving as an avenue for the recognition of graduates of Chico public schools who have made a significant contribution to society and to recognize and honor the Chico public school teachers who were the most inspirational in the lives of those graduates chosen to be members of the Chico Public Education Hall of Fame.

Reta Rickmers, PVHS art instructor and art department chair and founder of The Art Studio@PV, received the Youth Art Month Award from the California Art Educators' Association (CAEA). The award was for "exemplifying and promoting excellence in Youth Art Month," and was a result in part of exhibiting the work of student artists in the Chico community. Reta also presented a workshop on Postmodern Art at the CAEA annual conference November 12-15. Congratulations, Reta!

Students in the Art Studio@PV program are working on several service-learning projects, through which they apply what they are learning in their art classes to benefit the community. These projects include creating designs for the Arts for All logo for the CUSD Arts Booster group; designing a poster for Going Frugal (a benefit for the North State Symphony); and designing a poster for the Empty Bowls fundraiser. Art Studio students are attending a weekly after-school drawing class taught by Lynette Montgomery, a college art instructor. Art Studio 2 students are also taking part in art-related job shadows and creating PowerPoint presentations about their experiences. To see the work of Art Studio students, visit the Art Studio show in the PVHS library. To learn more about the program, contact Reta Rickmers at PVHS, or visit there website by clicking here.
