The Academics Plus Program at Sierra View School focuses on reading, writing and math, rounded out by a solid curriculum in composition, science, history, and geography. Enrichment subjects, such as art, drama, and music are taught, but the fundamental program receives priority. Academics Plus at Sierra View has over three decades of success with this approach.
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. The program places special emphasis on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills.
GATE classes seek to enrich and extend the education of gifted students in a variety of ways, including adjusting the pace and depth of instruction and discussion, and additional thematic investigations. Additional instruction and investigations within grade-level curricula are emphasized rather than acceleration through grades.
Hands on Thematic Learning
Hooker Oak School is a community of self-reliant learners. School and home are blended into a larger community as children, teachers, staff and parents work together. The community extends beyond the classroom walls to other classes, to the Chico urban community, and out into the world.
Oakdale K-5 provides traditional independent study to Kindergarten through 5th grade students in the Chico Unified School District. Beginning with the 2018-19 school year, this long-standing program will be housed at Oak Bridge Academy inside the Chico Mall.
Chico Unified School District's Two-Way Immersion Program groups native Spanish speakers with native English speakers in the same classroom. Ideally, one-half of the students are Spanish speakers and one-half are English speakers. Positive interaction between groups ensures that our students learn from each other. As friendships build, children become excited about working and playing in two languages.
Through hands-on science experiences in our classrooms, our on-site lab, and through a variety of tailored field experiences, students will be exposed to the scientific concepts and processes appropriate to their level of understanding based on grade-level science standards. In orchestration with the science content, our students will receive instruction in the "Engineering Design Process" using site-adopted engineering curriculum that dovetails with the concepts taught in life, earth, and physical science.
