| Welcome to Chico Unified School District! We are proud of our outstanding schools, teachers, and staff who serve over 12,000 students from Chico and the surrounding areas. While California continues to underfund education, the CUSD community continues to provide outstanding learning opportunities for our students. As the 2008-2009 school year begins, CUSD can take pride in our many accomplishments from last year. While we do not have space to list everything we have done, here is a representative sampling: - Chico Unified was awarded a 5 star ranking by Expansion Management magazine, placing it in the top 20% of school districts in the US.
- The overwhelming majority of our schools continue to demonstrate significant academic gains each year, as determined by our API scores.
- Marigold Elementary was designated a California Distinguished School in 2008.
- Chico High students won the 2008 Science Bowl championships for northern California and were invited to compete in Washington, D.C., while Pleasant Valley High students bested the regional competition and earned the right to represent CUSD in the California Academic Decathalon.
- In association with ChicoState, we were awarded one of eight Math Partnership grants in California for $1.6 million dollars, which will be used to strengthen the knowledge base of our Math teachers.
- Our Welding, Culinary Arts, Agriculture, and Academy for Communication and Technology programs were awarded almost $ 2 million dollars in Career Technical Education modernization grants from the state of California.
- Our K-8 English/Spanish Dual Immersion program was expanded to meet student demand.
- We established an apprenticeship program with Aero Union, one of the premier firefighting companies in the US.
- With backing from our local community, the Chico Outlaws professional baseball benefit game raised approximately $30,000 for our athletic programs.
For the 2008-2009 school year, we will continue to focus on improving student academic achievement through our collaborative professional learning community process, with additional emphasis on our English Learner and Special Education students. Expanding our community outreach efforts and actively encouraging the establishment of new partnerships with local organizations and businesses will remain another area of concentration. Finally, we are committed to the enhancement of both our internal and external communication as we continue to implement our fiscal recovery plan. I look forward to this school year and invite your participation in our vibrant school community. Please feel free to contact me at (530) 891-3000 x149.
