Staff Survey Results
| | Welcome to Chico Unified School District! We are proud of our outstanding schools, teachers, and staff who serve over 12,000 students from Chico and the surrounding areas.
While California continues to underfund education, the CUSD community continues to provide outstanding learning opportunities for our students. As the 2009-2010 school year begins, CUSD can take pride in our many accomplishments from last year. While we do not have space to list everything we have done, here is a representative sampling:
| |
|
| | - Chico Unified was awarded a 5 star ranking by Expansion Management magazine, placing it in the top 20% of school districts in the US.
- The overwhelming majority of our schools continue to demonstrate significant academic gains each year, as determined by our API scores.
- Marigold Elementary was designated a California Distinguished School in 2008.
- Chico High students won the 2008 Science Bowl championships for northern California and were invited to compete in Washington, D.C., while Pleasant Valley High students bested the regional competition and earned the right to represent CUSD in the California Academic Decathalon.
- In association with ChicoState, we were awarded one of eight Math Partnership grants in California for $1.6 million dollars, which will be used to strengthen the knowledge base of our Math teachers.
- Our Welding, Culinary Arts, Agriculture, and Academy for Communication and Technology programs were awarded almost $ 2 million dollars in Career Technical Education modernization grants from the state of California.
- Our K-8 English/Spanish Dual Immersion program was expanded to meet student demand.
- We established an apprenticeship program with Aero Union, one of the premier firefighting companies in the US.
- With backing from our local community, the Chico Outlaws professional baseball benefit game raised approximately $30,000 for our athletic programs.
For the 2009-2010 school year, we will continue to focus on improving student academic achievement through our collaborative professional learning community process, with additional emphasis on our English Learner and Special Education students. Expanding our community outreach efforts and actively encouraging the establishment of new partnerships with local organizations and businesses will remain another area of concentration. Finally, we are committed to the enhancement of both our internal and external communication as we continue to implement our fiscal recovery plan. I look forward to this school year and invite your participation in our vibrant school community. Please feel free to contact me at (530) 891-3000 x149.
Sincerely, Kelly Staley Superintendent

| | Dear CUSD Community, The collapse of the national and State economies have resulted in a State budget that has negatively impacted all State entities and has hit K-12 education especially hard. Notices of non-reelection and/or possible layoff have gone to many CUSD certificated staff members. These are commonly referred to as March 15 notices because per Education Code, when there is the possibility that a certificated staff member may not return to work for the District the following year, we are required to provide official notice on or before March 15. It is our desire in the upcoming weeks to reduce the number of notices that move forward as we learn more about our flexibility options through the recently passed State budget. The reality is that many excellent certificated staff members will be released or laid off. We have heard from parents that these are staff members who are exceptional, who do great work with students and that it will be a disservice to lose such talented and caring educators. I could not agree more. It is a tragedy that we are faced with this dilemma, but, we have a responsibility to insure that Chico Unified School District remains a viable educational opportunity for our community and our children. If there was ever a time to work together&this is it! I encourage anyone who has concerns about the process we are going through or anyone who has questions about any notice they receive to call (891-3000 x 142) or write Bob Feaster, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources at: bfeaster@chicousd.org. Sincerely, Kelly Staley | |

| | Click here to view the feedback I received from the survey in which I asked all staff to answer the following four questions: - What is your position within CUSD?
- What has the district done to hinder your ability to do your job?
- What has the district done to help you do your job?
- What specific issues would you like to see the district address during the 2008-09 school year?
Thank you CUSD staff for your time and honesty in answering these questions. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions or additional comments. – Kelly | |
