Modernization Projects
|
| | On November 3, 1998, California voters passed a $9.2 billion school bond initiative. Of that total, $6.7 billion was set aside for public K-12 schools for construction of new facilities and the repair of existing facilities.
The School Facility Program (SFP) began on December 4, 1998 and is a significant change over previous State facilities programs. The SFP provides funding, from the state school bond, to school districts for modernization and new construction of school facilities. The funding is in the form of grants approved by the State Allocation Board (SAB). The Chico Senior High School modernization grant was provided on an 80/20 basis with the State paying 80% and the District paying 20% of the costs associated with modernization. A district is eligible to receive grants when students are housed in permanent buildings that are over 25 years old or relocatable classrooms that are over 20 years old. The Chico Senior High modernization project was completed in April 2005.
On November 5, 2002, California voters passed a $13.2 billion school bond initiative, the largest school bond in the history of the State. It contains $11.4 billion for K-12 public school facilities. New legislation in 2002 altered the SFP. One of the changes contained in the new provisions modified the modernization State/local share from 80/20 to 60/40. As a result, the Bidwell Junior High School modernization grant, funded from this bond, was provided on a 60/40 basis with the State paying 60% and the District paying 40% of the costs associated with modernization. The first phase of the Bidwell Junior High modernization was completed in October 2005. The second phase of the modernization (Science classrooms) was completed in January 2007. | |
