Would you like a guest speaker in your classes to discuss Pakistani and Afghani culture, religion, or history? Mahan Mirza, a professor in the CSUC religious studies department, has volunteered his time to present in CUSD classes on Pakistan, making connections to the book-in-common. We also have a panel of students and community members of Pakistani descent who have offered to share their culture and answer questions. Contact Liz Metzger at emetzger@chicousd.org if you are interested in setting up a presentation | |

| | A book-in-common promotes literacy and reading, and unites the community through a common experience. Although CSUC, Butte College, and the public library have each had a book-in-common internally in the past, this is the first year that the whole community has collaborated on a project like this. Though the major goal of this project is community cohesiveness and education about a volatile and important area of the world, the organizers of this project also hope to raise the money it takes to build a school in the Pakistan/Afghanistan region through Mortenson's Central Asia Institute.
Our goals within the CUSD for this project are to: - Bring our community together – both locally and internationally
- Offer a ‘menu’ of ideas to CUSD (not a ‘mandate’) on how to access the book in common and increase knowledge and understanding (through book groups, lit classes, other classes, clubs, etc…)
- Empower students with the knowledge that they can make a difference
- Foster interest in public service, in turning gang violence around, and in working for peace

| | Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace…One School At A Time is the true story of Greg Mortenson, saved after an almost-deadly attempt to climb K2 and nursed back to health by the residents of the remote Pakistani village of Korphe. In exchange, he promises to return and build the villagers a school. Since then he has built 55 schools, many for girls, in some of the most isolated and dangerous parts of Taliban-controlled Pakistan and Afghanistan. Tom Brokaw calls it "one of the most remarkable adventure stories of our time …not only a thrilling read, [but] proof that one ordinary person, with the right combination of character and determination, really can change the world." | |

| | Read the Book: Copies are available at Lyon Books in downtown Chico, at Barnes and Noble, and at the public libraries throughout Butte County. Read it on your own, or form a book discussion group with others at your school site or workplace.
Discuss the Book: No time to join a book group? Share your thoughts about it with others on this blog sponsored by the Chico Enterprise-Record. Donate the Book: When you've finished reading, consider donating your used copy of Three Cups of Tea to the district. Drop boxes are set up in the libraries at CHS, PVHS, and the District Office. We have received about 250 copies for students to read through very generous donations from Butte College's Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, individual community members, and author Greg Mortenson. However, there are more teachers wanting to use the book than we have copies, so any additional copies would be welcome.
Teach the Book: See the two curriculum links below as a starting point. We are also setting up a Sharepoint site for teachers to share curriculum and teaching ideas around the book.
