| | ACADEMICS PLUS (K-6)
Academics Plus is an elementary school alternative that places special emphasis on the "three R's," science and history. For further information, please call: Sierra View Elementary, 891-3117.
ACE-LIFE ACADEMY
This program at Pleasant Valley High School is for students interested in pursuing careers related to "Teaching, Child Development and Human Services." This is a smaller learning community funded by the California Partnership Academies. The focus of the academy is to integrate academic skills and career skill building. Human Service occupations include but are not limited to counseling, coaching, firefighter/paramedic, recreation or activities director, senior services, etc. Many classes receive college credits. ACT: THE ACADEMY FOR COMMUNICATIONS AND TECHNOLOGY (9-12)
ACT is a Chico High program that gives students the opportunity to develop skills using technology for research, communication and presentation. ACT goals are to provide strong academic and technical skills which prepare students for post-secondary education and the 21st century work place.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT PROGRAMS (9-12)

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination (9-12)
This program at CHS and PVHS is designed to support students in their goal of achieving university and college level entrance requirements based on "writing as a tool of learning", collabortive grouping, inquiry methods, and study skills.

| | BUSINESS TECHNOLOGY CERTIFICATE CAREER PATHWAYS
The Business Technology Department at PVHS offers certificate career pathways in Accounting and Computer and Information Systems. Many classes in both pathways are articulated with Butte College as part of the 2+2+2 program to earn high school and college credits.
BUTTE COLLEGE PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT (2+2+2)
Butte College has identified certain high school classes that are judged to be equivalent in scope, content, and skill level to selected Butte College courses. If a student maintains and completes these courses with a "B" average while in high school, he/she can earn both high school and college credits at the same time. Articulated courses earn transfer credit to either the CSU or UC systems.

| | CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION
The junior and senior high schools offer many state-approved career and technical education programs and certificated career pathways in the following areas: agriculture, business technology, industrial arts and technology, home economics careers and technology. These programs focus on core skills in grades 7-10 and narrow the score to career specific skills in grades 10-12. Many courses receive articulated 2+2 credit with Butte College. Student leadership pre-professional organizations including VICA, FFA, and FHA-HEROare integrated into curriculum. These organizations are frequently called CTSO's (Career and Technical Student Organizations) and VSO's (Vocational Student Organizations). All have state and national affiliations.
CHICO HIGH WEST
The Chico High West program is a 2- or 3-period block stressing intellectual development, critical thinking and problem solving. The curriculum is interdisciplinary (math, English, social science and service learning) and taught by a team of teachers. COLLEGE CONNECTION PROGRAM
The College Connection Program is a unique partnership between Butte Community College and CUSD. Selected seniors attend Butte College on a daily basis, concurrently earning both high school and college credit. The goal of the program is to provide an accelerated, challenging set of courses to the highly motivated, college-bound senior. Applicants are selected in the spring of their Junior year and begin the program the following fall semester. COMPUTERS FOR FAMILIES PROGRAM
CUSD families who have no computer at home may be eligible for reduced-price computers and Internet services. See the Computers for Families webpage. Anyone may earn a free computer by volunteering 50 hours at Computers for Classrooms, Inc.
CONTINUATION EDUCATION (9-12)
This secondary school alternative program provides an educational option to students whose needs cannot be satisfactorily met in the comprehensive secondary school. Students meet the same curricular requirements for a high school diploma at Fair View High School as at the comprehensive high school. CULINARY ART AND HOSPITALITY PATHWAY
This program prepares students over several years to have the skills necessary to enter this job market and be successful. Many students continue their education postsecondary majoring in food service management or attending trade schools. This pathway is recognized with excellence from the State Department of Education and a "Prostart" school from the California Restaurant Association. | |

| | ELEMENTARY MUSIC (K-6)

ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT (ELD) PROGRAM AND BILINGUAL SUPPORT SERVICES
The ELD program assists English learner (EL) students in developing proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading and writing English. ELD classes are provided at both elementary and secondary school sites. Primary language support is provided by selected teachers and classroom aides at various elementary school sites. | | FASHION DESIGN AND MERCHANDISING
Students involved in this pathway are prepared and job placed. Students have many career opportunities in this state's growing industry. California offers many postsecondary majors and trade schools in this career area.
FINE ARTS PROGRAM (K-6)

| | GIFTED AND TALENTED EDUCATION (GATE) (2-12)
The GATE alternative program provides qualified students with the opportunity to participate in classes designed to challenge their skills and talents and to meet needs that may not be met in the regular classroom. CUSD supports four self-contained classes, one each for grades 3, 4, 5 and 6, located at Marigold Elementary. A half-day per week "pullout" program for grades 2-6, taught by Janet Carroll (email), is housed at Chapman Elementary. Middle school GATE programs consist of teams of students grouped together for two or three classes per day, usually English, science and history. High school students have numerous options, depending on the campus; including Honors, Advanced Placement, Butte College Connection, High School Scholars (CSUC), and International Baccalaureate. Students identified as "Talented" in art, music, dance/drama, leadership or literature enroll in classes germane to their strengths.

Independent Study is an individualized educational strategy for the highly motivated student. The K-8 component stresses a high degree of parental involvement, while the 9-12 component emphasizes student responsibility for completion of assignments. The Open Structured Classroom is a K-8 school of choice. Through the use of special materials, classroom aides, resource specialists and/or reduced class size, the District provides additional assistance to students needing specified types of remedial help. SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM (K-12)

SOUL: STUDENTS OFFERING UNLIMITED LEADERSHIP (9-12)

SPECIAL EDUCATION (3-21 YEARS OF AGE)
Students who are experiencing learning problems and who possess learning exceptionalities that will qualify them for special education, may, through parent and school planning, receive special education services designed to better meet their individual needs. SMALLER LEARNING COMMUNITIES
Smaller Learning Communities (SLCs) is not a single “program” or approach: instead, it is a way of coordinating many different existing programs that help support student achievement and connect students to school, and of adding new programs that will complement the existing ones. It is an effort to connect every student to school so that every student is able to achieve to the best of his or her ability.
SUMMER SCHOOL (GRADES 7-12)

| | TEENAGE PARENTING AND CHILD CARE (9-12)
This program at the District continuation high school assists pregnant and parenting teenagers in completing their education. TITLE I (K-12)
This Federally-funded program is designed to address the needs of the educationally disadvantaged students in the District. Fourteen of the twenty-three schools participate in this program. For further information, please call: Educational Services, 891-3000, ext. 105.
TWO-WAY SPANISH IMMERSION PROGRAM (K-6)
Through classes and interaction in both Spanish and English, students learn to read, write and communicate naturally in two languages. Within six years, students acquire dual language fluency and literacy. | | WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM (11-12)
Eleventh and twelfth grade students may enroll in the District's work experience program. Work Experience is an elective class that combines legally paid employment with classroom instruction. To earn a grade and credit, a student must attend mandatory class sessions one period per week, complete assignments, and be employed 66% of the semester.
