| | The Math Department has an emphasis on problem solving which will benefit students throughout their lives. Classes include the basics of Sixth and Seventh Grade math, followed by Math 8/Algebra A, which presents the first half of a two-year algebra program. Students will complete the second half as high school freshmen. Accelerated students who pass a math placement test before Seventh Grade may take Algebra 1 in Grade Seven, which covers the two-year program in one year. They then take Geometry in Grade Eight. All classes meet the California Mathematics Content Standards for California Public Schools for Grades 6-8. | |

| | MATH 6
The sixth grade math curriculum at Bidwell Junior High School follows the California Mathematics Standards. Our sixth graders use the same textbook that all other sixth graders in the district use. Concepts covered will include: number sense, pre-algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics, probability, and problem solving. Top-performing sixth graders may take an “Algebra Readiness” exam in May to determine if they qualify for advanced placement into full-course Algebra 1 as a seventh grader.
****************************************************************************************************** MATH 7
Math 7 is a pre-algebra course, preparing students for Algebra in eighth grade. It is a very important course in the preparation for higher mathematics. This course covers all material outlined in the California Mathematics Standards, it also reviews basic computational skills. Topics covered include: integers, equations, graphing, probability, statistics, area and perimeter, and exponents. To progress to Algebra 1 as an eighth grader, your son or daughter must earn passing grades each quarter and pass the “Algebra Readiness” exam and have his/her teacher’s recommendation.
******************************************************************************************************************************** MATH 8
Algebra A is designed to teach the first half of a two year algebra program to all eighth grade students throughout Chico Unified School District. Students will finish the other half of Algebra next year in ninth grade. Some of the topics covered include problem solving, logic, basic computational skills, graphing, patterns and functions, and solving equations. Upon successful completion of this course (grade of “C” or better) the students will take Algebra B their freshman year of high school.
******************************************************************************************************************************** ALGEBRA 1
Algebra 1 is the gateway course to higher mathematics. It is a fast-paced course whose grade will count toward college entrance requirements. Topics covered include: writing and solving algebraic equations; area and perimeter with algebraic applications; review of the distributive property and integer operations; numeric, algebraic, and geometric ratios; graphing linear equations using slope and intercept; solving systems of equations and quadratic functions. Upon satisfactory completion of Algebra 1 (grade of C or better) the students will go to Geometry the following year.
******************************************************************************************************************************** GEOMETRY
Geometry is offered for those students who have successfully completed Algebra 1 in 7th grade. The textbook used [College Preparatory Mathematics (CPM) Math 2] is the same text that is used at the high schools in the Chico Unified School District. The geometry skills and concepts developed in this discipline are useful to all students. Aside from learning these skills and concepts, students will develop their ability to construct formal, logical arguments and proofs in geometric settings and problems. | |
