Opportunity Program Overview
| | Ms. Burton Opportunity Education Opportunity Class Overview Ed Code 48630: Legislative intent -It is the intent of the Legislature to provide an opportunity for pupils who are, or are in danger of becoming, habitually truant from instruction or are in danger of becoming irregular in attendance -who are, or are in danger of becoming, insubordinate or disorderly during their attendance -to resolve their problems so that they may return to regular classes or schools as soon as practicable.
The primary purpose of the opportunity class is to help pupils resolve their problem so they may reestablish themselves for return to regular classes as soon as practical. Opportunity classes are established to provide an additional opportunity for students who are habitually truant from instruction, irregular in attendance, insubordinate, disorderly while in attendance or failing academically for most of the present semester. The secondary purpose of this class is to help pupils develop acceptable social attitudes and personal goals and to help him/her improve his/her basic skills so that he may be returned to the regular program as soon as possible. The Opportunity setting should be interpreted to students, staff, parents, and the community as an opportunity for successful achievement rather than as a punitive measure. Counseling will be a priority of the opportunity setting with the major aim being to help the pupil change their feelings towards themselves, other people and their school. The development of a more socially acceptable pattern of behavior is a more immediate goal than the pupil’s academic achievement. The Opportunity teacher must have a warm, friendly attitude toward students with problems. The teacher must be capable of exercising the professional judgment necessary to build and to provide an individualized program of instruction. Sensitivity to the feelings, needs, and background of the pupils enrolled in the class is of primary importance. The major aim of the teacher should be to help the pupil change their feelings toward themselves, other people, and their school. Pupils will receive instruction in the Core Subjects: Math, English, Science and History, as well as Life Skills, Organization Skills and Social Skills.
