Opportunity Class Overview

Ed Code 48630: Legislative intent
-It is the intent of the Legislature to provide an opportunity for pupils who are, or are in danger of becoming, habitually truant from instruction or are in danger of becoming irregular in attendance
-who are, or are in danger of becoming, insubordinate or disorderly during their  attendance
-to resolve their problems so that they may return to regular classes or schools as soon as practicable.

The primary purpose of the opportunity class is to help pupils resolve their problem so they may reestablish themselves for return to regular classes as soon as practical.

Opportunity classes are established to provide an additional opportunity for students who are habitually truant from instruction, irregular in attendance, insubordinate, disorderly while in attendance or failing academically for most of the present semester.

The secondary purpose of this class is to help pupils develop acceptable social attitudes and personal goals and to help him/her improve his/her basic skills so that he may be returned to the regular program as soon as possible.

The Opportunity setting should be interpreted to students, staff, parents, and the community as an opportunity for successful achievement rather than as a punitive measure.

Counseling will be a priority of the opportunity setting with the major aim being to help the pupil change their feelings towards themselves, other people and their school. The development of a more socially acceptable pattern of behavior is a more immediate goal than the pupil’s academic achievement.

The Opportunity teacher must have a warm, friendly attitude toward students with problems. The teacher must be capable of exercising the professional judgment necessary to build and to provide an individualized program of instruction. Sensitivity to the feelings, needs, and background of the pupils enrolled in the class is of primary importance. The major aim of the teacher should be to help the pupil change their feelings toward themselves, other people, and their school.

Pupils will receive instruction in the Core Subjects: Math, English, Science and History, as well as Life Skills, Organization Skills and Social Skills.

OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS

_____ Ed Code 48630 states that it is the legislative intent that students that attend the Opportunity Program resolve their difficulties and return to regular classes as soon as practicable.  I will work hard to correct my difficulties while with the Opportunity Program and return to regular classes.

_____  Ed Code 48200 states that each person between the ages of 6 and 19 years is subject to compulsory full-time education.  It is my responsibility to be at school on time each day that school is in session.

_____  Board Policy 5035 allows schools to develop and disseminate student dress standards in cooperation with parents, staff and students.  The dress standard at the Opportunity Program has been explained to me and I will meet this standard on a daily basis while I attend the Opportunity Program.

_____  The classroom of the Opportunity Program has the expectation that students will enter quietly and begin each class with some sort of written activity.  It is my responsibility to enter each class quietly and get to work on the activities without being told.

_____  Using the restroom during class time is seen as a disruption to the learning process.  It is my responsibility to use the restroom before school, during my breaks, and between classes.  I should not have to use the restroom during class time.

Besides the expectations listed above, the Opportunity Program also has set objectives for student performance.  These objectives are as follows:

_____  Participation—students will attend school on a regular basis, arrive on time, prepared to learn, and possess the proper learning materials.  As stated above, I know it is my responsibility to be at school on time each day.  It is also my responsibility to have a good attitude towards learning and to have something to write with each class period.  If I do not have a pen or pencil, it is my responsibility to secure one before I enter class.

_____  Give and Take—Students will follow school rules and willingly accept responsibility for their actions.  I will demonstrate respect for myself, my peers and the Opportunity Program staff.  My behavior is my responsibility.

_____  Academic Skills—Students will strive to meet District standards.  I will earn a 2.0 GPA at the Opportunity Program.

_____  Life Skills—Students will practice and follow guidelines for effective communication, conflict management, and problem solving.  If I am having difficulties with another student, I will go to the Counseling Office for assistance and/or mediation.

_____  Give Back—Students will encourage others and serve as positive role models.  It is my responsibility to give back to my school/community while at the Opportunity Program.

I understand and agree to follow the Opportunity Program expectations as listed above as well as the general school rules and student responsibilities outlined in the Opportunity Program Guide to School Discipline that I have received.
