| | Algebra 1 is the gateway course to higher mathematics. It is a fast-paced course whose grade will count toward college entrance requirements. The class is taught with an emphasis on divergent/abstract reasoning, problem solving, and group collaboration. Topics covered include: writing and solving algebraic equations; area and perimeter with algebraic applications; review of the distributive property and integer operations; numeric, algebraic, and geometric ratios; graphing linear equations using slope and intercept; graphing and solving systems of equations with quadratic functions. Given the rigorous nature of this course, only those students that are up to the challenge and willing to get extra help (via “zero period” if necessary) will be allowed into this class. Upon satisfactory completion of Algebra 1 (grade of C or better) the students will go to Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, and then Statistics or Calculus. | |
