Literacy Mentors
|
| | CHAMP has partnered with California State University, Chico and Community Action Volunteers in Education (C.A.V.E.) to recruit volunteer literacy mentors who work with students at Chico High School. Students are matched one-on-one with a mentor who meets with them 2 hours per week over the course of a semester. The literacy mentors provide their mentees with the individualized attention they need to attain the literacy skills necessary to succeed in life.
Mentors work with Zack Kincheloe, the Chico High School English Department Chair and campus-wide literacy coordinator, who also teaches Chico High School's struggling readers. He provides mentors each day with activities that reinforce the acquisition of literacy skills in his classroom.
CHAMP trains the mentors to strike a balance between the affective and academic domains. Mentors understand the importance of the "whole" student and provide support socially as well as in other academic disciplines.
We would like to recognize the Starbucks Foundation and Wells Fargo Foundation for their support of the Literacy Mentor component of CHAMP. Our partnership with these organizations is enabling us to reach young people who need vital help in their quest to become capable and productive citizens. Providing them with literacy skills is critical to these efforts. | |
