| | Chico High School has long had a strong and distinguished music program.
Over the years, CHS has been fortunate to have some very talented music directors and students. The trophies, plaques and awards are too numerous to display in one place.
There are seven ensembles in the department: - A Cappella
- Madrigals
- Cantilena (women’s choir)
- Men’s Choir
- ChicoVoce (jazz choir)
- Chico Chic (girls’ quartet)
- Sac Street Boys (barbershop quartet)
Each of these ensembles performs at concerts and for special events in the community throughout the year. The three larger ensembles consistently take top honors at regional and superior festivals in Northern California.
2001 was a milestone year for the Choral Department. In April, the A Capella Choir traveled to Australia to perform in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney. It was the first time a Chico High performing ensemble had had the opportunity to perform abroad since 1974. This was an historic occasion for the school and an experience of a lifetime for the students who participated in this international tour.
In 2003, A Cappella and Chico Voce traveled to New York to perform under the direction of John Rudder. The Choirs prepped for over a year learning the extra music after school.
In 2004, our Madrigal Choir was fortunate enough to participate in a vocal class aboard a cruise ship, with ports of call throughout the Western Caribbean.
