Opportunity Tile Table project    Chess Club    Field Trip to Chico State to see Losang - February 2008

Chico Junior High offers several activities in which students can choose to participate.  During the school day, students can take part in classes such as Music, Leadership, Yearbook, Art, Outdoor Adventure and ITECH.  These courses are designed to help develop student skills in areas outside of the core-teaching curriculum.

The Wetlands project is an activity that is run through the seventh grade science classes. This unique project was developed to teach students how to protect migratory land and was just honored with a national Take Pride in America award from Washington D.C.

Chico Jr. High also provides before and after school activities that encompass the entire school year.  We believe that student activities provide opportunities for creativity that enhance character, promote personal growth and augment classroom learning. Also, the extracurricular program makes an essential contribution to the lives of students and the climate of the school. Our program provides every student with the opportunity to participate.

BLAST is a great before and after school activity.

This project was funded by a mini-grant from the Chico Arts Commission ($1,500). Janice Hofmann, Chico Juniors Library Media Assistant and owner of All Fired Up, worked with the 8th grate Opportunity class from the beginning, November 2007, until completion in June 2008.

A design team of five students came up with the design concept after getting feedback from their classmates. The project begun with wet clay in January. The teachers helped roll slabs of clay at the All Fired Up studio which were then transported to the school between sheets of sheetrock. Pattern pieces were used to transfer the design to the wet clay and the students had a lot of freedom with how they textured and carved their pieces.

After the first firing the tiles were brought back to school for glazing. After a second firing and waiting for the right weather, installation and grouting happened with the whole class.

Field Trip to Chico State to see Losang - February 2008Top of Page

Losang has been in Chico for over the past month creating what is known as the sacred Kalachakra mandala.  The process of his work is called sand painting and it took over 20 years for Losang to master this.

Creating these incredibly exquisite mandalas was first done by none other than Buddha himself, and has been passed down since that time and, until very recently, was done only in Buddhist monasteries for their sacred rituals.  His Holiness the Dalai Lama (for whom Losang was a former assistant) has given permission for Losang to create these mandalas in the United States over the past few years.  This is his second visit to Chico for the creation of a mandala.

The Kalachakra Mandala is one which is designed to bring peace and healing to all who view it as well as the Earth’s whole environment.  This is the first time this mandala has been created by just one individual rather than a group of monks.  Many people in the Chico community have been blessed over this past month by viewing the mandala, being in Losang’s presence, or listening to his wise and compassionate words.  He asks us all to begin to practice the habits that will allow us to open our hearts, see our own inner beauty, and be a bearer of peace and joy in this world.
