                                                                                           January 22, 2008

Dear Parents,

I hope you were able to have an enjoyable three-day weekend if you got time off.  We now have the fence on one side of our yard rebuilt thanks to the extended weekend.  I think we should have one three day weekend a month just so you can catch up on things.  If only I was in charge…J

Spelling
This week the students will be practicing the spelling pattern /ay/.  This may be confusing for them since we have also been learning about the long a sound spelled /a_ e/.    I will be helping them to see that the /ay/ is used when you hear the long a sound at the end of a word, unlike rake, where you hear the “k” sound at the end.

Math
We will be working on telling time to the hour and the half-hour.  We will also be learning how to write the time e.g. 2:00 or 2:30.  We will continue to do some graphing activities as well.  We are also working on addition and subtraction with numbers 5-10.

Reading
We will be working on review of the short /i/ sound and the long /i/ sound spelled /i_e/.  We will also review digraphs and adding –s and –ing to words.

Social Studies
We will finish up our unit on the past by learning and comparing families in the past and also about household tools of the past and present.  I will be bringing in some old items that were my great great grandparents’ that were brought over by wagon train from Iowa.  I am looking forward to the students sharing their vehicles of the future with the class on Monday the 28th.  They have shared their ideas and I love what they have come up with, very creative.  We read about the Wright brothers and discussed how many people thought that their ideas were crazy and yet they invented the first plane.  So, my goal is to let the students see that they too can create something, keep trying like the Wright brothers and you never know where it will take you.  J

Cold and Flu season:  We are running low on hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes for the classroom.  If you would like to donate some to the class I would greatly appreciate it.  I wipe down the tables daily and the students wipe their desks at least twice a week.  I also have hand sanitizer available at all times and we use it before lunch and snack recess.  This is my way to try to help keep your kids healthy in my room.   Any help with these items would be wonderful.  Thanks for your consideration!

My Web page:  My project this year has been to develop my web page and to develop a power point presentation for the classroom.  The presentation is coming along; the 6th grade GenYes students are helping me with the Social Studies United States Symbol unit.  I also have been working on my web page.  I have updated the calendar for the entire year so if you want to see when classroom happenings are you can refer to it.  I will add more when things come up.  I will also be putting links on the web page so that you and your child may find some websites that are tied to our curriculum.  Please note, this is a work in progress, so please do not expect too much but my goal is that each month there will be more added for parents and students to use.  To get to the web page go to our LCC web site and then click on Miss Amy’s page, and then click on teacher web pages and look for first grade and then my name.  Again, this is a work in progress.  Oh, and my other goal is to add my parent letters to this page so you can always go back and read if you misplace a letter or if your child goes between two homes now you both have access to all the information.

Thanks for turning in the little books daily.  Remember, these books count for Pawing Through Pages.

Have a great week!

Seana Velasco

PS- Our new student teacher begins on Monday, January 28th.  She seems very nice and very motivated.  She will be with us for 15 weeks.  She is in phase II of the program so she will be taking on more responsibilities than the last student teacher.  Yikes, I have a hard time giving up control.  However, I will make sure that as she takes over more that all lessons etc. are aligned with the benchmarks and State Standards.  I will not let your children be used as guinea pigs.J  Oops, Frappi didn’t like that remark!
