Homework Policies
|
| | The goal of homework is to reinforce what is learned at school and instill good work habits. Assignments are generally begun in class, which means students should always know the directions of their assignments when working on them at home. The most important thing your child can do at home to help him/herself succeed in school is READ!!
Every sixth grade student has a spiral bound planner. The planner is an important tool for your student to use. He/she should write each day's assignment in the planner. Please ask to see it and review the assignments with your child! Independent reading should be recorded (title and pages read) each day in the planner to provide accountability. Your signature each week lets me know that your child is doing his/her reading and using his/her planner. I will check planners periodically to assess independent reading. (Nothing recorded = no credit for independent reading!)
Students should not spend more than one hour on homework each night. I expect 30 minutes of reading, 4 nights per week, or a total of two hours of reading per week to be done at home. Additional homework should not take more than 30 minutes. If your child is struggling with an assignment, please let me know. I am happy to answer phone calls in the evenings. If your child works for 30 minutes on an assignment without finishing it, please note that on the assignment and he/she will recieve full credit. Long term assignments (book projects, research papers, writing assignments) provide an opportunity for your child to practice good time management skills. I try to allow plenty of in class and homework time for students to complete these. Some students invariably wait until the last minute...please help your child to manage his/her time. | |
