Full Inclusion

 Full Inclusion

Full inclusion is happening at Sierra View because we embrace all children and no classroom participants are made to feel different.  In order for full inclusion to work planning together as a team to meet our children's needs must be done.  An increased awareness of integrating students with mild to severe disabilities has to be talked about and discussed for educational effectiveness.
Full inclusion is all children learning in integrated environments with the necessary services and supports that they need so they can be successful.  Classrooms contain labeled and non labeled children helping to facilitate opportunities for interaction and the development of friendships. Full inclusion is a new service delivery model for special education which emphasizes collaboration between special education and general education.
The county is suppose to provide support to general education teachers who have children with disabilities in their classrooms.  It is a program designed so that children learning side by side even though they have different educational goals are succeeding.
Currently at sierra View we have three programs working towards the full inclusion process.  They are the RSP (Resource Specialist Program), the SDC (Special Day Class), and the S.H. (Severely Handicapped through the county).  Each child involved has an IEP (Individual Educational Plan).  These children have been, in most cases, full integrated in regular education classrooms full time or for 90% of their day at school.
Some of the things that make full inclusion possible are strong administrative support, parent involvement, preparation and planning time which includes staff development, consultants and planned technical assistance to help facilitate and secure needed expertise.  We need to increase our knowledge of effective practices, models and resources for implementing the integration of students with mild to severe disabilities.
We are currently identifying specific strategies for team building and developing collaboration between general specific educators and parents to ensure educational goals and objectives are met for each student.  It is the synergy of all Sierra View teachers and principal that makes integration work!  Our school climate is enhanced, our staff invigorated, our student display an increased sense of self-confidence and self esteem and our school as a community shows a greater sensitivity to society at large.
We at sierra View are moving from a dual system of education to a system that prepares our children for creating an inclusive society in the future.
