On July 9, 2021, Governor Newsom signed Assembly Bill (AB) 130 into law which requires "a school district to notify parents and guardians of all enrolled pupils of their options to enroll their child in in-person instruction or independent study during the 2021-22 school year."
Chico Unified offers several Independent Study Programs for students and parents to choose from:
- Oak Bridge Academy (our dedicated online learning program): Learn More About Oak Bridge Academy
- Located at 1350 E. Lassen Avenue, Chico.
- College prep course, flexible online learning and options for accelerated coursework.
- Hybrid options allow students to participate in clubs, sports and electives offered at their neighborhood high school.
- Panther Academy (located at Chico High School): Learn More About the CHS Panther Academy
- Provides the option to combine campus and online courses
- Viking Academy (located at Pleasant Valley High School): Learn More About the PVHS Viking Academy
- Provides the option to combine campus and online courses
As stated in AB 130, parents have the right to request a pupil-parent-educator conference meeting before enrolling in an Independent Study Program to discuss student rights regarding procedures for enrolling, disenrolling and reenrolling in Independent Study, and the synchronous and asynchronous instructional time that a student will have access to as part of the Independent Study Program.
