Background Information

Chico Unified School District began exploring the idea of transitioning to a block schedule in the Spring of 2017. Chico High School and Pleasant Valley High School staff began discussing the need to provide an alternative schedule for students due to the increasing competing expectations placed upon students.

Members of the District Leadership Committee (DLC) and school administrators began identifying the 14 dilemmas that students face in a traditional six-period day.

Student Benefits to a Block Schedule

Student Benefits to a Block Schedule

Some of the student benefits provided by transitioning from a six-period day to an eight-period day include:
  • students may enroll in additional A-G required courses, elective courses, intervention courses, and/or courses required for graduation.
  • students only engage in course material for a maximum of four (4) classes per day, rather than all six (6)
  • the scope and depth of classroom activities may be expanded to allow for deeper engagement during class lessons
  • students may accelerate through post-secondary pathways
