Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

Background Information

Background Information

Targeted case managers, school psychologists, counselors, and elementary counseling assistants help support the social-emotional and mental health of our students. Wellness rooms, Wellness teams, classroom-based social-emotional lessons and strategies, and counselor-supported groups have become a staple across all levels in Chico Unified.
Students also have access to a variety of opportunities to participate in the following:
  • Leadership
  • Art, Music, and Drama
  • Athletics
  • On-site activities and clubs

Students are surveyed three times per year through an SEL Universal Screener and regularly scheduled pulses (shorter surveys) to gauge social-emotional wellness. If a student either reports a need for support or is identified through the response analysis, the student is contacted by school support staff. Additional support staff have been allocated to each school site to address students’ needs.
