The Board of Education welcomes the opportunity to connect with parent, teachers and staff.
The Governing Board consists of five members elected during statewide primary or general elections. Board Members serve a term of four years in office. The Board operates under the authority of the California Constitution, State Legislature, California Education Code and the California State Board of Education. The trustees are responsible for oversight, policy and adopting the annual Chico Unified School District Local Control and Accountability Plan which serves as the foundation for district-wide goals and priorities.

Regular Board Meetings
Regular Board Meetings are typically held the third Wednesday of the month*.

When: Third Wednesday of the Month (some exceptions apply)
Time: Open Session 6 p.m. (Closed Session 5 p.m.)
Location: Butte County Office of Education, Carmichael Building, Ste. 300 (2491 Carmichael Drive, Suite 300, Chico, CA 95928)

The Board of Education approves a meeting schedule during the December Annual Organizational Meeting. Additional meetings may be added, and times or locations may change at times. For the most accurate meeting time and location, please view the posted meeting agenda (posted 72 hours in advance of the meeting).

Special Board Meetings
Under the Brown Act, a Special Board Meeting can be held outside of the regular schedule. Agendas for a Special Board Meeting must be posted at least 24 hours in advance, and discussions are strictly limited to the specific items listed on that agenda (there are NO opportunities for Items From the Floor at Special Board Meetings).

What is the Brown Act?
The intent and purpose of the Brown Act is to ensure that "actions (of local legislative bodies) be taken openly and that their deliberations be conducted openly." (Government Code Section 54950) The general rule of the act is contained in Section 54953 which declares "All meetings of the legislative body of a local agency shall be open and public..." The Education Code also requires that, with limited exceptions, school board meetings be open to the public. (Education Code Section 35145).

The Board Governance handbook reflects the governance team's work on the creation of a framework for effective governance. This document involves ongoing discussions about unity of purpose, roles, commitment to norms, and coming to an agreement on protocols/formal structures that will enable the governance team to perform its responsibilities in a way that best benefits all children.
