English Honors Placement
Chico Unified uses results from multiple measures of student achievement to make recommendations for placement in an Honors English course. During January, your child will take an English/Language Arts assessment using the IXL software platform (grades 6-8) or Star Reading (grade 5). Teachers use the results of these assessments to make well-informed instructional decisions for your child. The results will also be used by staff to make recommendations for Honors English. To qualify for an honors recommendation, students must score at least one year above grade level. In addition, students must receive a performance level of “Exceeds Standard” and receive a Lexile© reading level score at least one year above grade level on the Smarter Balanced English/Language Arts Assessment given this spring. In addition, students currently receiving an “A” in an Honors English class will be recommended. Note: A recommendation does not guarantee a final placement. Final placement is contingent upon class size.
The purpose of utilizing assessment results for Honors Recommendations is to ensure students have equitable access to Honors English courses.
(English Honors placement is for incoming grades 6-7 & 9)
