Substitute Application Process

Order your official transcripts, Electronic transcripts must be emailed to jsmead@chicousd.org to be accepted.
Schedule an appointment for Livescan by calling (530) 891-3000, x20122. The cost for the Livescan is $35, payable by cash, check or card.
Pick up the substitute application packet from the Chico Unified School District.
Once Chico Unified receives your Livescan clearance from the Department of Justice you will be notified and at that time you may return to turn in your application packet. The following documents must be submitted with the application.
- A valid California Teaching Credential OR Emergency 30-Day Permit
- A completed CUSD Substitute Teaching Application Packet
- Copy of a negative TB test (within the last 60 days)
- Printout of CUSD/Keenan Safeschool Training (click here for link to training)

30-Day Substitute Permit

If you need to apply for a 30-Day Substitute Permit, please contact Janessa Smead at jsmead@chicousd.org. You will need to bring the following to apply:

Official transcripts showing the conferral of a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
Basic skills requirement. See Commission leaflet CL-667, entitled Basic Skills Requirement for additional information.

Certificated Substitute Salary Schedule

(Effective August 2021)

Due to COVID-19 and the substitute shortage, we have raised our pay rates for the 2022/23 school year. TK-12 certificated substitutes will be paid as follows:

Day-to-Day Substitutes

Working a full day* - $175
Working more than one-half day, but less than a full day (.8) - $140
Working up to one-half day (.6) - $105

Long-Term Substitutes (Commencing on the eleventh day of continuous substitute service for the same staff person.)

Working a full day* - $200
Working more than one-half day, but less than a full day (.8) - $160
Working up to one-half day (.6) - $120

During the regular school year, grades TK-12 certificated substitutes will be paid as follows:

Day-to-Day Substitutes

Working a full day* - $120
Working more than one-half day, but less than a full day (.8) - $96
Working up to one-half day (.6) - $72

Long-Term Substitutes (Commencing on the eleventh day of continuous substitute service for the same staff person.)

Working a full day* - $150
Working more than one-half day, but less than a full day (.8) - $120
Working up to one-half day (.6) - $90

* If the regular teacher's assignment includes an additional class, the substitute shall earn an additional factor of 0.20 at the junior high schools and an additional factor of 0.17 at the high schools.
